A Quick Explanation

What is the Life Number?

The Life Number—often also called the Life Path Number—is, in numerology, a sum of digits derived from a person’s full date of birth. It is symbolically interpreted as an indication of a person’s core themes, potential, and areas of growth.

The Life Number is not a scientific personality assessment, and it does not determine your future. When used thoughtfully, it can help you explore new questions: What strengths are you already putting into practice? What patterns do you encounter repeatedly? In what areas would you like to act more consciously?

Depending on the school of numerology, there are differences in calculation and interpretation. This calculator uses the common method of adding all the digits of the birth date and treating 11, 22, and 33 as master numbers.

Calculation Example

How do you calculate the life number?

Example: Date of birth: January 5, 1969

0 + 5 + 0 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 6 + 9 = 31
3 + 1 = 4

The result is displayed as 31/4 Written: 31 is the composite source number, 4 is the reduced life number.

The Three-Step Calculation

  1. Write down your full date of birth, including all the digits.
  2. Add all the digits together.
  3. Calculate the sum of the digits again until you reach 1–9, 11, 22, or 33.

Some numerological traditions calculate the day, month, and year separately at first. This can result in different composite numbers. For clarity, this page explicitly states the method used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About the Life Number

Is the Life Number the same as the Life Path Number?

In German-speaking countries, these terms are generally used interchangeably. They usually refer to the number calculated from the full date of birth.

Can my life number change over the course of my life?

No, because it's calculated based on your unchanging date of birth. How you experience and express the issues associated with it can change significantly as you gain experience and grow.

Are the master numbers 11, 22, and 33 further reduced?

In the method used here, they are treated as master numbers and are read together with their base number: 11/2, 22/4, and 33/6. Other schools may calculate them differently.

What is the difference between a life number and a name number?

The Life Path Number is calculated from the date of birth. For the Name Number, letters are converted into numbers according to a set system. It therefore provides a different symbolic perspective.

Is the significance of the life number scientifically proven?

No. Numerology is a spiritual or esoteric method of interpretation and is not a scientifically recognized diagnostic tool. It can be used as a voluntary prompt for reflection.

Do I need my time and place of birth to calculate my life path number?

No. The full date of birth is sufficient for the life number calculated here. The time and place of birth are not included in this calculation.
